Virtual public meeting

The City of Oklahoma City is seeking public input on a major project for Western Avenue and Memorial Road and the resurfacing of NW 122nd Street from Western Avenue to Santa Fe Avenue. The project will:

  • Widen Western Avenue from south of Pawnee Drive to south of NW 138th Street.
  • Resurface Western Avenue from NW 122nd Street to south of Pawnee Drive.
  • Resurface NW 122nd Street from Western Avenue to Santa Fe Avenue.

and make significant improvements to enhance safety and traffic flow.

Five alternatives

Five alternatives were evaluated during the preliminary engineering phase of the design process.

Alternative 1A

Alternative 1A
  • Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) with eastbound through movement on EB Memorial Rd
  • Signal and Turn Lane Improvements at Pawnee Dr intersection

Alternative 1B

Alternative 1B
  • Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) with eastbound through movement on EB Memorial Rd
  • Multi-lane Roundabout at Pawnee Dr intersection
  • Alt. 1B provides lowest vehicle delays and shortest queues

Alternative 2A

Alternative 2A
  • Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) with no EB Memorial Rd thru movement
  • Signal and Turn Lane Improvements at Pawnee Dr intersection
  • Less direct access for I-344 ramps and Costco
  • Heavy U-turn movements

Alternative 2B

Alternative 2B
  • Alternative 2B
  • Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) with no EB Memorial Rd thru movement
  • Multi-lane Roundabout at Pawnee Dr intersection
  • Less direct access for I-344 ramps and Costco
    • Heavy U-turn movements
    • LOS F at Pawnee Dr

Alternative 3

Alternative 3
  • DDI with eastbound through movement on EB Memorial Rd
  • No improvements at Pawnee Dr intersection
  • Fewer lanes on Western Ave
  • Lowest-cost Alternative
  • Alt. 3 provides highest vehicle delays and longest queues

Preferred alternative

Alternative 1B

Diverging diamond interchange (DDI)

A diverging diamond interchange (DDI) is a type of diamond interchange that allows traffic to temporarily cross to the left side of the road. DDIs are designed to reduce the number of places where traffic crosses each other, which can reduce the potential for crashes. They also allow for multiple traffic movements to happen at the same time.

Why DDIs Work Well

  • DDIs allow for frontage road traffic to turn left or right to and from Western Avenue without having to cross opposing lanes of traffic Efficient use of space that fits underneath existing I-344 bridge spans Provides significant improvement in traffic operations compared to a traditional diamond interchange, especially when turning traffic volumes on the side road (e.g. Western Ave) are high

Additional Advantages of Alternative 1B

  • Maintains thru movements for Eastbound Memorial Road with more direct access for I-344 ramps and Costco
  • Provides best traffic operations through Western Avenue, especially at the Pawnee Drive intersection
    • Significantly less delay per vehicle (better performance) as compared to Alternatives 2A, 2B, and 3
    • The roundabout at Pawnee Drive performs significantly better than Alternative 1A for lower to moderate volumes (off-peak periods)
